To design a unique “one of a kind oil lamp” Ed starts with a 6″x 6″ block of wood; using a vintage lathe he sculpts the lamp base. The wood influences the finished product – highlighting the grains and tones of the wood. Using a specialized lathe tool he add details to ensure each lamp base is a unique design.
A drill press is used to craft two inner circle – the outer circle holds the glass chimney intact and the inner circle houses the lamp fuel canister. Safety is paramount so each base is tested to ensure the glass chimney and canister fit securely and safely.
Hand sanding is an on-going process from lathe to finish – to ensure a “Touch Me” smooth finish Ed starts with 60 grit and progresses to 220 grit grade sand paper. Depending on wood type the base could be lightly stained or left in its natural state – 8 – 10 coats of eco friendly oil is applied and hand rubbed (light sanding between coats) into the wood. This “smooth as silk” finish will last forever and the wood will become more beautiful as its ages.
Each chimney is individually chosen to compliment the base. Protective padding is included in the design to prevent furniture marring.
Each lamp is signed by the artist.
The lamp fuel canister is produced by Holloway – an American company located in Central New York. Canisters are designed to be child proof, the disposable plastic fuel canister is smokeless and odorless and provides 17 8 hours of flickering flame. When not lit the cap should be replaced eliminating evaporation of lamp fuel. Additional canisters are available.
Pads are incorporated to prevent furniture marring.
Each lamp is signed by the artist and hand crafted to become a family heirloom
Maintenance: – once a year polish using a quality paste wax. Cool glass chimny before washing in warm soapy water.
