The first one-room schools in Northern NY began popping up, along the crossroads soon after the turn of the nineteenth centu-rv. Stepping Back in Time offers the reader unique tales of teachers and students at these little schools. With the advent of better roads and centralization, all of the country schools closed, but the memories live on.
Educator Judy Liscum was raised on a farm outside the village of Canton, NY. Two one-room schools were situated within a mile or so of her home, but she and her brothers lived near the village, so they attended the Grammar School. In 1963, she began teaching at the same school and worked with several teachers who had “closed” area country schools, but still had a strong passion for those little institutions of learning
In 1997, Judy retired from Canton Central School after thirtv-one vears of teaching, but wasn’t out of the classroom long. She began working as an adjunct instructor at St. Lawrence University and has continued for eleven years. Judy and her husband Reg are parents of two children and grandparents of five. They still call themselves Northern New Yorkers and split their time between the North Country and Florida.
